1. ～んです


Meaning: ah, the grammar point that everyone learns in Japanese 100 but is possible to master. This has quite a few usages, as shown below:


a. Seeking affirmation or agreement


     広島に新幹線で乗るんですね。We are going to Hiroshima by Shinkansen right?


b. Question word + んです: Seeking explanation


     どうして今日授業に遅れて来たの。Why were you late to class today?
     何時ごろ映画は始まるんですか。What time does the movie start?


c. Giving reason
     寝坊したんだ。I overslept
     5時なんだ。5O'clock


d.  Seeking suggestion, help, advice, favor by softening the request
     新宿駅に行きたいんですけど。。。I want to go to Shinjuku station


Usage:


     V-plain/i-adj + んです:    行かないんです、高いんです、行かなかった
     N/na-adj + なんんです:   静かなんです、学生なんです、先生だったんです、元気じゃなかったんです

Grammar 4 - 6

1. だろう/でしょう

Meaning: Used to reflect uncertainty in formal speech. Can also be used in questions to make them more polite and less assuming. Carry a stronger and more assertive meaning in casual speech. Plain form of でしょう is だろう and is often used in male speech

Usage: replace です with でしょう

     明日は雨でしょう: It will probably rain tomorrow
     あの人が田中さんでしょうか: That is probably Mr. Tanaka, right?
     時間がなって言ったでしょう: That's why I told you that we did not have enough time
     彼が寝ているだろう: He is probably sleeping

2. なくちゃいけない

Meaning: informal, casual version of ~なければならない/なければいけない

3. AてからB

Meaning: Imply order of events: A happens first and then B takes place.

     勉強してから遊びました: I played after I studied
     日本にいってはじめてからどんぐらいになりますか: How long has it been since you first went to Japan?

Grammar 1 - 3

1. ～のがへたです

Meaning: bad at something (the opposite of ～のが上手です)
Usage: V/N-plain + のがへたです

     私は日本がへたです: I am bad at Japanese.
     私は料理を作るのがへたです: I am bad at cooking

2. V + なる/する

V + (こと/の）になる: Simply describe a simple change of action

      私はりんごジュースを飲むことになる: I came to drink apple juice (I did not drink it before)

V + (こと/の）にする: Describe a decision

     私はりんごジュースを飲むことにする: I decide to drink apple juice

V-potential + ようになる: Describe a change in the ability to do something

     私はりんごジュースが飲めるようになる: I become able to drink apple juice

V + ようにする: Describe an effort to do something

     私はりんごジュースを飲むようにする: I make an effort to drink apple juice

3. ので

Meaning: generally a softer form of から which does not infer explicit causation, favored in polite speech and in explaining a reason for some discourteous action. Shortened to んで in casual speech.

Usage: V/i-adj +  ので                    N/n-adj + ので

     私は学生なので、お金が持っていない: I am a student so I don't have money

     あしたテストがあるので、今日遊べなかった: I couldn't play today because I have a test tomorrow

     なので、週日勉強した: Therefore, I studied all day

What is this?

My latest attempt at forcing myself to do extra work outside of class. This time I am setting the bar low, 5 new kanjis, 2 grammar points and 10 vocabulary words a day for six days a week ̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣(giving myself a day to be lazy). I'm going to start from JLPT Level N5 and work my way up, skipping the kanjii and grammar points that I am already know along the way.

I am using materials from this website with a bit of individualization of course. I use Anki for vocabs and kanjis. It is an amazing software for testing yourself on vocabs and kanjis. I can mix newly learned vocabs and kanjis with old ones, allowing me to review words that I have learned. For grammar, Tae Kim's guide is pretty much the definite source.
